Sakharov Network urges EU presidency to ask China to free Hu Jia Sakharov Laureate 2008

Fifteen past winners of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, known as the Sakharov Network, have written to the Czech government, the current holder of the European Union's rotating presidency, urging it to ask the Chinese government to free 2008 Sakharov Prize laureate Hu Jia at once.

The letter has been sent just a few days before the next round of dialogue between the European Union and China on human rights, due to take place on 20 May 2009.

As the Chinese government has just announced a "human rights action plan", the Sakharov Network thinks it is vital that the EU should press China's representatives for concrete actions such as Hu's release.

A Sakharov Network member, Hu has already served a third of a three-and-a-half-year sentence on a charge of "inciting subversion of state authority."

The Sakharov Network is worried about Hu's poor health and fears that he could be forced to work in a prison factory. His fitness for work was examined in February by the authorities in the Beijing prison where he is currently held.

Hu's wife, Zeng Jinyan, and their daughter were able to visit Hu in prison on 24 February. It was the first time Zeng had been allowed to see him in three months. Hu seemed to have "aged" but was happy to see them, Zeng said. Guards stayed with them throughout the meeting and recorded their conversion. They were forbidden to discuss anything other than family matters.

Zeng has been calling for Hu's release in her widely-read blog (http://www.zengjinyan.org/).

The Sakharov Network condemns the fact that some of Hu's friends have also been arrested for calling for freedom of expression in China. They include Liu Xiaobo, one of the Charter 08 initiators, who has been held since 8 December 2008.
