                                                                              White Clothes Day

                       ----Please wear white on 6·4

The 20 years' anniversary of 6·4 is coming up. We call on our countrymen: let us all wear white that day. This would be an expression of our grief and remembrance, as well as our longing for freedom and democracy.

6·4 is not simply the 6·4 movement. It has already become a symbol for much more. We commemorate this day not merely for the sake of commemorating those who died on that day, but also for all those who have fallen under despotic rule in China in the past few decades.

June is in the summer, a season when people wear white anyway. The authorities would not be able to distinguish those who are or who are not commemorating June Fourth. The authorities cannot trouble you in your white clothing only. Wearing white clothes is the simplest, the most feasible and the least risky way to express our remembrance. As for the authorities, it will be the hardest to suppress and the hardest to prevent.

Should hundreds and thousands of people wear white on June Fourth, producing a white ocean, what a scenario would that be! The whole nation of China and the whole world would be moved.  It will mark the rebirth of our national great spirit, like a phoenix rising from its ashes.

In order to be effective, the first and foremost is to make it known to as many people as possible. We must spread the message extensively from now on, trying to tell everyone else: our families, our friends and relatives, as well as our neighbours, classmates and colleagues. We can employ all available means, including conversations, telephones, facsimile, letters, brochures, email and mobile phone messages. It is not enough to send this message once only. Let's send it a few more times: the more the better. We should also remind each other on June 3 or on the day.

Admittedly, due to continuous suppression, many of those who experienced June Fourth have tended to forget it, and many from the younger generation are ignorant of the true meaning of June Fourth. Exactly because of this, at the upcoming moment of the 20 years' anniversary of June Fourth, we have to stand up. We have to make it a public act, to awake those numbed souls and to inform the younger generation. There is no way we can predict how many people will wear white on the day of June Fourth. This is not so important. Different from other group activities, the characters of White Clothes Day are the following. Those taking part will not face bigger risks if the number of participants is small; neither will they be embarrassed if they are the only ones in white. What is important is we should not lose heart and that we should not give up. Let's start with ourselves. Even if I am the only one, I will stick to it. You may find out many others are thinking of doing the same as you do.

Please remember: on June Fourth, we will wear white.
