Dear Recipient,
The recent announcement sent to you about the formation of the Women's Harm Reduction International Network contained errors in the links to the website for registration. We apologise for this and are now sending the corrected version to you.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

women's harm reduction international network (whrin)

WHRIN is a global platform to reduce the harms associated with drug use by women and to develop an enabling environment for the implementation and expansion of harm reduction resources for women

BACKGROUND

It is known that a significant percentage (ranging from at least 25% up to nearly half depending on country/region) of all people who inject drugs in the world are women. Female drug users tend to be even less visible than their male counterparts, but relative visibility does not properly account for the fact that research, services, guidelines, training programs and data collection are generally mainstreamed into a male context. Many women, especially those who are pregnant or who have children, report that they feel left out of existing harm reduction activities. The absence of appropriate policies and services is even more marked in developing and transitional countries, where violations of the rights of female users and their children are common occurrences

For some years members of the international harm reduction community have acknowledged that the lack of clear and relevant evidence, research and information on women who use drugs. The WHRIN elist (moderated by the WHRIN working group) will play a key role in meeting the following network objectives:

WHRIN Objectives

1. To provide a forum to discuss the needs of and challenges faced by women who use drugs

2. To advocate for national, regional and international bodies to adopt and implement policies and programmes which promote and support harm reduction interventions for women and girls.

3. To provide access to high quality resources (including educational material) which assist women who use drug and/or the people who work with them to improve access to gender sensitive harm reduction services.

HOW IS WHRIN MANAGED?

At the Bangkok IHRC, a group of women formed an interim international advisory committee to oversee the coordination and involvement of women across the globe in the development and implementation of the WHRIN. The liaison persons for this committee are Ruth Birgin ruth@aidsprojects.com and Diane Riley Rileydm@aol.com

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

To register for the group, go to www.talkingdrugs.org/user/register. Choose a username, give your email address and tick the box at the bottom marked "Join Women's Harm Reduction International Network (WHRIN)". You would then be emailed by TalkingDrugs and asked to confirm your identity; you can then login on www.TalkingDrugs.org and go to www.talkingdrugs.org/womens-harm-reduction-group where you will find the group.
