Worldwide Urgent Appeal: Beijing: Nationwide Massive Cracking Down of China Human Rights Defenders surrounding the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony for Liu Xiaobo

Democratic Party of China, of which many members exiled outside of China, issued the following news release. We urge the people who receive this letter to pay attention to the outrageous persecution and extreme measures of repression that are ongoing in China. The Nobel Peace Prize gave the world an opportunity to highlight the true dictatorial face of China's communist government.
Following a series of nationwide persecution of human rights activists that was unprecedented ever since June 4th, 1989, the Beijing government even further heightened its brutal repression. Beijing government is even more paranoid after the announcement of Liu Xiaobo winning Nobel Peace Prize of 2010.
While this letter is being written, the following things are happening:
Blind barefoot lawyer Chen Guangcheng, even after his release from imprisonment for four years was denied any access to basic healthcare, to meet with anybody, or to use phone, even though he suffered from internal bleeding and other severe health problems. Multiple levels of police and police hired gangsters surrounded his home; most advanced communication-blockage machine were used to ensure that there would be no one who can meet and talk with him. Chen was thrown into prison after exposing the massive abuse of local villagers, including forceful sterilization, killing of nearly-born fetus and massive detention and extortion of villagers in the name of “family planning policy”.
Dr Fan Yafeng was just mysteriously arrested -again, this is the fifth time within one month. One person managed to bring out the news, however, nobody can make a call to either his home, his mobile phone or phone of his family member -people who called him all got automatic message saying, “this number does not exist” -while clearly was set up by the Chinese government. Dr Fan Yafeng is widely recognized for his leading role in rights-defence movement (weiquan yundong). He is the chief editor of “Rights-Defence Monthly Journal” (weiquan yue kan). He is the chief leader of “China Rights-Defence Network” (zhongguo weiquan lianmeng), this has website, blog and also mailing list. He also is a key leader of “China Human Rights Alliance” (zhongguo renquan lianmeng). He is most respected among Christians in China for his tireless advocacy for freedom of religion, for the freedom to worship by Christian house churches. Police recently not only arrested him, but also detained his wife and child while secretly broke into his home and searched his computer (please see the news by Asianews, and facebook for Chinaaid association on Nov 24th). In the past, he also assisted Gao Zhisheng, Hu Jia, Yang Maodong (Guo feixiong) and Chen Guangcheng -all of whom are either serving long-term imprisonment or disappeared and tortured. We urge your immediate attention on his situation. We fear that Fan Yafeng may be the next person following this list of brutal persecution of peaceful human rights advocates.
Gao Zhisheng, famous human rights lawyer, is disappeared again since April, after only one week reappearance. Gao Zhisheng suffered extreme torture, including piercing his genitals and baton him all over the body. When he reappeared briefly, it was clear that he looked tortured even though he was not allowed to talk about what happened to him.
Li Hai, a renowned human rights activist famous for help document and deliver help for over 600 victims of June 4th massacre, 1989, disappeared now for over one month. Li Hai was last seen with Christian in a house church gathering (at Fan Yafeng's home), and ever since October was not seen by anyone.
Qin Yongmin, who was just released a few days ago after spending in total 22 years in prison for his democracy activities and tortured, was again reported being taken away by police. Qin Yongmin, after released, wrote an open letter to Hu Jintao and urge him to release Liu Xiaobo to receive his Nobel Peace Prize.
In Guangzhou, human rights activist Xiao Yong was detained, his wife said, and his wife also said that his computers and hard drives were also taken away.
In Beijing, human rights activist, Liu Shasha was forcefully disappeared while staying at the home of Zhou Li on December 9th. She currently disappeared.
As of Dec 10th, the early morning in Beijing, many rights activists in Beijing reported that their phones were cut off. Many people who use twitter shared the event that, not only people like Fan Yafeng's family were completely information-wise imprisoned, but perhaps hundreds to thousands of people all over China had this treatment. Many people who tried to use mobile phone or home phone could not talk with each other. It is widely known that, every Chinese activists (not necessarily hardline dissidents) who maybe considered sympathetic to human rights will have their phone conversations monitored -by going through a particular medium which is directly connected with the police bureau. This is not the first time that China used this measure. After the July 5th Ugygur riot in Xinjiang, west of China, the whole province was cut off of any internet or phone service.
Beijing government appeared to be extremely anxious about having anyone show up in the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Not only it threatened formally all countries in the world, but also blocked ordinary people's travelling outside of China. Amnesty International documented at least 272 people were blocked from leaving China for fear that they may participate in the ceremony.
Beijing Bookstore Wansheng (sometimes translated as All saints bookstore) and attached Thinkers Cafe were shut down during the ceremony. Nobody was allowed to get into the bookstore. The bookstore opened for 10 years now, and it is a popular site for pro-democracy intellectuals to meet and chat. Previously in October, its owner Liu Suli was attacked by Beijing police and severely injured his backbone.
The world should know that, even though many Chinese activists are not officially sentenced into prison, a pervasive use of house arrest is used in China. In many of these circumstances, like the one above of Chen Guangcheng, even minimal basic needs cannot be met.
The following are a list of people recently suffered from a variety of persecution surrounding the Nobel Peace Prize event:
Cheng Jianping: female human rights activist. She was involved in many peaceful advocacy activities, including advocacy for raped and died women Yan Xiaoling, Gao Yingying, June 4th leader Chen Yang etc. Perhaps the most ridiculous part was that she was sentenced to one year in labour camp just for one sentence, which she was as a ridicule against some Chinese anti-Japanese angry-youth.
Woeser, famous Tibetan female blogger, was not allowed to go outside and house arrested.
Wang Lihong, who helped on uniting internet users for peaceful advocacy to fight against the arbitrary imprisonment of three internet users (Fan Yanqiong, Wu Huaying and You Jingyou) female human rights activist, were taken away and house arrested.
Hada, an Inner Mongolian democracy activist should be released on December 10th to rejoin with his wife Xinna and their son Weilesi. However, right before he was about to be released, the local government suddenly arrested his wife a few days ago on a false charge of “illegal business”. The timing is not an accident. It is made to ensure that there is no way Hada can communicate with external people. (source from Boxun.com)
Since there are thousands of people were targeted during this crack-down, it is not possible to list them all, but we welcome any inquiry.
Perhaps the most alarming news is what is going to happen. Texus based organization, ChinaAid released information from inside sources that Chinese authorities are preparing to launch a crackdown called “Operation Deterrence” to coincide with the awarding of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize on December 10. During the campaign of an unspecified duration, authorities are to arrest and sentence a total of 20 rights defenders.
ChinaAid is deeply shocked by this news, which only further highlights the worsening human rights situation in China. Beijing is determined to treat the Chinese people and the international community as enemies.
National Committee of Democratic Party of China has its headquarter based in New York. Its co-chairpersons are Wang Juntao and Wang Youcai. Its chair of executive committee is Wang Tiancheng. Its general secretary is Fu Shenqi. During the years, about 300 members of Democratic Party of China were sentenced long term in prison, in total over 1,000 years. However, currently, despite numerous hardships, Democratic Party of China worked hard to reunite together, and offer crucial support to the ongoing China's democratic and human rights struggles.
