Letter to New York Times on Gates Foundation in China

Here is a letter from ASIA Catalyst to New York Times as a feedback on "HIV Tests Turn Blood Into Cash in China".

Boycott Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in China" has been accredited to circulate it.

Money can not be used to buy dignity, shame on seller is wrong, the thing only right is to spurn the buyer_ Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in China!

I am being in New York right now. I will hold an action to protest Gates Foundation "buy blood" in China before going back to China soon. If you are interesting in this, just feel free to contact me. More info, please visit: https://sites.google.com/site/boycottgatesfoundation

Best wishes,

Dear editor,

The article on Gates Foundation’s cash-for-tests program in China (“HIV Tests Turn Blood Into Cash in China”) did not address some serious human rights concerns.

As a new UNAIDS report shows, AIDS-related stigma is widespread in China. Our own research found that hospitals frequently turn away HIV-positive children. Adults may be fired from their jobs and evicted from their homes; children are often turned away by schools.

Worse, there are no protections of medical confidentiality. A clinic in one town where we work posted a list of names with HIV test results on the wall, for all to see. Some people who test positive must leave town, change their names, and go underground.

While Chinese laws prohibit discrimination, the lack of legal aid means that most victims never go to court. The Gates Foundation can’t ignore the negative fallout from AIDS testing; they should support legal aid and legal reform.

Sincerely,
