17 February 2010 – A new online database produced by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shines a light on how women lag far behind men in their access to land, major stumbling bock to rural development.

The Gender and Land Rights Database offers up-to-date information on the legal rights of men and women differ in nearly 80 countries, allowing users to find the total number of women landholders and rural households headed by women, among other statistics, in these nations.

Information on Gender & Land Rights

This Database contains Country level information on social, economic, political and cultural issues related to the gender inequalities embedded in those rights.

Disparity on land access is one of the major causes for social and gender inequalities in rural areas, and it jeopardizes, as a consequence, rural food security as well as the wellbeing of individuals and families.

The Database offers information on the 6 following Categories:

National legal frame

·  Rights entrenched in the Constitution

·  Women's property and use rights in Civil Code, Labour Code, Family Code

·  Inheritance legal mechanisms

·  Land Law

·  Policies/Institutional mechanisms enforcing or preventing women's land rights

International treaties and conventions

·CEDAW: Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (adopted on 18/12/1979). Relevant articles: 2, 4, 14 and 16.

·CEDAW-OP: Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (adopted on 06/10/1999).

·ICESCR: International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (adopted on 16/12/1966). Relevant articles: 2(2), 3 and 11(1).

·ICCPR: International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (adopted on 16/12/1966). Relevant articles: 2(1), 3, 14, 16 and 23(4).
